I've heard you can make them from cocktail sticks or bbq skewers. Then spray paint them gold or your choice of colour.
I haven't tried this though, so can't comment on how good it looks.

If you want to make them thinner you could use the stiff florist wire and spray them.

I used cocktail sticks with a small bead on each end.

Hi, yes I bought several lengths of hollow brass tubing, the type that modellers use for ships and boats etc. You can buy the right diameter as there are several thicknesses to choose from. Cut the lengths required with an hacksaw or a dremmel and lightly sand the ends. Drill very small holes at each end of every step [ just slightly over the length of your carpet and as far into the bend in the stairs as you can get. I used the tiniest brass screw eyes and threaded the brass rails into each end about a 1/4" in from the ends. I then stuck tiny brass door knobs into each of the hollow tube and glued the brass eyes into the drilled holes - PERFECT! You can also use glass headed dress making pins painted gold. Be careful to use something for the ends only slightly larger than the tubing used as the balance will look wrong.

Sadly, after moving out of a large cottage with a sail loft which housed my collection and into temp accommodation while waiting for our new house to be completed, I had a major senior moment of madness and decided to sell the entire lot. I just couldn`t face another house move and the nightmare of moving all my houses [ one of them was over 5ft square] so I sold the lot. I felt so relieved when it came to moving into the new house and not having the worry. I was too busy buying new things and `nest building` in the new house to miss my mini homes. Then, after a long and boring winter it hit me.....the sudden feeling of bereavement for all the little things I`d made and bought throughout the years - things I know I can never replace including the house that my Father had built from Houseworks plans over 20 yrs ago. How could I have been so foolish - Middle aged Nan`s beware! However, on a brighter note, my friend encouraged me to forget what had gone and start over again so that`s just what I`m doing. I have made the decision to keep to just one house and be selective over what I put in it. I am now the proud owner of the Grosnevor Hall and basement....I`m over the moon. I have not started on it yet as Hubby is going to set up a area in the garage to assemble and paint it before I bring it in the house to do the nice bits. I am so looking forward to this, in the meantime I`ve started spending my evenings making bits and bobs. I`ve bought a few things on Ebay and Hubs has just bought me an Anniversary present of several items of Jiayi which I love. I will keep you posted on my future progress, sorry to prattle on but happy happy happy to be back in the mini world.
