Default polymer clay

Hey guys,

Does anyone use polymer clay?

If so, I have a simple question, if you don't mind.

I am planning on making my own miniature food out of polmer clay. I can't imagine this will become a regular thing (maybe monthly or more). Do I need a separate oven? Or can I use the one in our kitchen?

Thank you.

Jess

you can use your own oven yes, if you leave the clay in for too long and it fills with fumes (i have done this several times, i bought a timer in the end lol) then leave the oven door open with a window/door in the kitchen open also and leave the room yourself. but so long as you keep track of the time or use the alarm on your phone etc

its a lot of fun making polymer clay food, am sure you will get a lot of enjoy and satisfaction from making your own too

Thanks, Sal. I'm really looking forward to giving it a try. I got one of Angie Scarr's books for christmas so I bought some bits and pieces and thought I'd give it a try today as I finally have a moment to myself! I just got worried because I saw somewhere on the internet that excessive baking of polymer clay in personal ovens can cause cancer. (it does seem that most things can, these days).

Thanks again

Jess

I agree with Sal and you don't have to stop at food! It is great for making other accessories like hot water bottles and toys and whatever you can think of!

You will need something not used for food to cook it on. I used to use baking paper but have graduated to an old tile.

I actually use Sculpey, which is probably the same thing, because it is easier to get where I live.

Ahh luckily I found a ceramic, tile-shaped plate we bought from Ikea that's chipped so I thought, perfect!

I find it easy to model with Fimo

And a lot of professional model food makers use it...
You still Have to bake it at 110 c for 30 minuets but the results are amazing

Im only 13 years old and I would say its is one of my strenths in model making !
