Hello all. I'm totally new to this!

I don't have the space for a dolls house so am going to get a Room display box. What is the difference between 1/12th and 1/24th am guessing 1 is bigger than the other? and what is the norm? Apologies if this sounds really thick I am new :D

Hello Dizzydora,

You are not thick and we where all new once, 1/12th scale is a nice size to work with, the way to work it out is every 1inch if room box is the same as 1ft in a real room, so if you got a room box that was 12inch by 8 inch, it would like having a room 12x8.

1/24th scale is 1/2 the size smaller, so it would be 6x4, there are more places now that do stuff for 1/24th but you can't make as much yourself for it, and you do have to look harder for little bits to go in it.

I get my room displays from www,tierneys.co.uk. they are big boxes with perspex on the front, they do mail order if you ring and ask.

Welcome to the forum. I'm slightly new myself. Still learning!!! 1/24th is half the size of 1/12th, and as far as i know, everything on the d.h.e is 1/12th. Hope this helps. Have fun.:)x

Hi Dizzydora,

Welcome to the forum and scale can be confusing......so we don't think you are thick at all....As other have said 1 12th is 1 inch to 1 foot.........1 24th is 1/2 an inch to 1 foot..... 1 12th is more common ......but 1 24th is getting this way too and is smaller so easier to fit in a small space.....

Let us know what you decide to do with your room box.......and pictures as you go is a definate must......:D

hi dizzydora and welcome. don't ever worry about sounding thick, just ask away. we were all new to this once and had no idea and needed help! i won't explain scale as this has already been done by the other but i just wanted to mention that if you are buying your room box it is also very very easy to make one! a sheet of mdf from B&Q is a fiver and that is more than enough to make one! i have just made a room box (with a roof) for my son and a conservatory for my other son (check out sam's conservatory and the plaice to be on hoe sweet home thread) these are the first time i have built anything and it took around an hour and half for the conservatory and 3 hours for the room box. the room only took longer cos i had to measure the roof and was being harrassed by an excited 10 year old!!

it really is so easy so mking your own is another option as well as buying....just wanted to add that!!

Aww thanks for all the replies this seems like a really friendly place.
Have just ordered a display box from a place in cornwall hopefully be here by middle of next week.
Wombat i know how your 10 year old must have felt! Have had to stop myself from ordering loads of furniture (isn't the internet wonderful!).

Hiya DizzyDora

Welcome to the forums, have you decided what your room box will be yet?

Am thinking I'll do a Library (early 1900's big house!) Have got it all planned, mahogany furniture, burgandy sofas, beige carpet, burgandy and beige wallpaper. Oh heck got a feeling this will become an expensive and obsessive hobby!

Will definatley post some piccies.

obsessive and expensive...sounds like you g that about right!! although i always say the good thing about this hobby is that when you are a bit strapped for cash there is always something to buy for a few punds or even the option of making things yourself which helps keep the costs down and gives you and great feeling of accomplishment!!
