Hi all -
Here is the work I have done so far. Cant make my mind up about the figures though :)
It's all accurate to 1880. I've been enjoying the research and have spent probably more time on that than actually working on the house. Still a long way to go though - a dining room, a drawing room.............bedroom................etc. etc.
Hope you enjoy it!

This is the most recent work I've done. It took me a year to complete all four levels and it's not quite finished. I still need door knobs and push plates and to make curtains for the windows on the "fourth wall".

Hi m-o-m, thanks for all your kind compliments. I'm having so much fun doing the house up.
The panelling came from a dolls house shop, the fretwork was purchased online and I made the stained glass window. Well, I rejigged two spare window frames, and painted a ready made panel! There are two lights behind it and it looks great at night.
As for the info, I get it from all over, stately homes, National Trust books, internet, anywhere really.

Hi Hannah,
Thanks for the kind compliments. I've just been looking for a couple of photos that show the outside and all the inside. Give me a wee while and I'll put them on
davidsmum
06-02-2008, 10:29 PM
Hi Sharen - thanks for all that. I'm glad you like it. The panelling was shop bought. I'm afraid I do it the expensive way (back to that thread now:)) I tend to buy rather than make. I see myself more as a collector - lol.
The flooring is bought in A3 sheets, at a Fair if I remember rightly. I put it on a cereal packet template and stick it down with double sided tape.
Inside and outside photos to follow shortly

I've put some more up. The outside, the inside, a more recent close up of a section of the kitchen and the next room to be tackled is the dining room. As you can see - the decorators are in but have gone for a cup of tea:)

Hi Lauraashley
Thanks so much for the compliments. I work away on my own as no-one else I know is interested in this so it's nice for folk to say they like it. I'm glad you find it inspiring. I'm sure you'll develop your own style with your house. Do you have a master plan, or a story worked out? What kind of house do you have again, I can't remember? I keep losing myself in the threads and can't remember which one I'm in. Or if I'm looking to reply to someone, I can't find them!
Please put some pics up of your house as you go, we're all interested in your progress and chivvying you along when you get stuck - lol.

Hi Sharen - so glad you like it. Do you have a story to go with Montgomery Hall. I find it useful when I'm buying stuff to be restricted (ie. if it's not the correct period then, no matter how much I like it, I don't buy it) I saw a really sweet little bottle of aspirin once and thought, I like that - then found out that aspirin wasn't around in 1880 so I didn't get it.
I like to buy a few bits before starting to get a feel for it and then I order more while I'm working on it and then when I've put all the bits in near the end, I can then see what I need to complete it. Although I would say it's never going to be complete.
Keep the pics of Montgomery Hall coming - I love looking at everyone's work

Hi m-o-m,
Thanks very much for all that. The decorator's table and ladder and stuff were the first thing's I bought!
It shouldn't be too long now before you get your lights. Where are they for?
As for the period, well I knew it was going to be Victorian as I am interested in all that. Then the date - I picked that date because it was around that time that they filled their houses with stuff, covered piano legs, covered the mantlepiece, etc but late enough in the period for electricity, the telephone and indoor plumbing to be brand new. That meant I could justify a bathroom and a telephone! Did you know - perforated toiler paper was introduced in 1880. That's the kind of stuff I'm finding out

hi davidsmum
i think this forum is great as like you say i dont know anyone who does dolls houses.
my house is the house that is beside my name .it didnt have a name when i bought it but i think i will call it "poterstown"it a place where my granny lived.
my master plan none really but i like the very pretty look.i love laura ashley i have lots of things in my own house(i one i live in)most i have bought in the sales.so i would like a mini laura ashley house .
it took me a while to find my way around these boards but i,m getting the hang of it now.
pictures:mad:i have them all loaded on to the laptop it took me awhile to work it out .but my problem is they are to big in size and i dont know how to size them down but i,ll work out :)

Hi davidsmum,
I think you are wonderful going into all the detail like that, it really is commendable of you..........My house, I don't think will be of any particular period, just pretty...........I hope.......although, the Georgian and Victorian period does strike a chord with me, so maybe it might be a crossover of the two..........can you do that?..............who knows, the main thing is to just enjoy it.............I'm awaiting lights for my living room, study, bedroom and the school room, plus skirting board and coving and Ohhhh so much more..........roll on the NEC.

Believe me, I have done all the planning too. While I was dry building, I wrote lists and lists of the furniture I wanted, even putting the code and price next to it. Either addicted or OCD, i'm not sure which lol. But yes, there is a buzz with this hobby, and it never goes away.

Hi Lauraashley
I like your house! I think it concentrates things if you have a theme, or a story to your house as it helps with purchases and decorating. It saves you running off in different directions and means you buy bits that really mean something. It's also great fun looking for that "special" something.
If you look back in the forum - two or three days, I think - "Sharen" gave me some very good instructions for loading photos. The only thing is, I can't remember which thread it was on:) If you can find it, they're very clear.
davidsmum
07-02-2008, 10:13 PM
Hi m-o-m
I'll bet your list is getting longer and longer for the NEC. Who worked it out to weeks and days? lol
You could combine Georgian and Victorian if your storyline meant that the present (Victorian)occupant of your house inherited it from his great great great (however many!) grandfather along with a whole heap of furniture, then his missus came along and decided to put her stamp on it! See, off I go again :)
hi davidsmum.your house has only one word to discribe it WOW loved the fret work and stained glass windows

Hi tre
Thanks for that. As I've said before, I'm having such a great time doing this. The only thing is, no one else I know is interested and when I bang on about it I can see them glaze over and switch off. I still need some bits for the hall. My next intention was to crack on with the dining room but I got into or should I say hooked on this forum and was inspired into doing a Christmas Box but couldn't wait 9 months or so - so I'm going to do a conservatory. Pics when it happens.
i know that feeling my older daughters (24 and 19) are just the same.all i get is im to old to be playing with dolls houses.but they have put there name on one for when i die.wouldnt mind so much but im only in my early 40s lol

I keep thinking if I threaten them with the thought that they will have to look after us in our old age then they might make a quick getaway.................it's not working boo hoo.
Still, on the other hand, they're quite useful to have around when I can't reach stuff, can't dig deep enough or (like you with your curtain tutorial m-o-m need a spare pair of hands!)
I might just keep them here a wee while longer. They're definitely not interested in the dolls house though!

16-03-2008, 06:20 PM
Hi Amanda,
Thanks for all that. The chair was from e-bay and the stair carpet................!! That took ages. I carpeted the staircase and made paper templates for the landings. There was a lot of fiddling and trimming to size then I stuck the carpet to the templates, made sure it all lined up and stuck it down. The most tricky bit was the half landing as I had to do it all by feel and with mirrors. By the way, talking about mirrors, a really handy piece of kit to have are dental tools. The tweezers are nice and long for reaching into the backs of rooms and you can use the mirror to look round the sides of chimney breasts to fit cornices.

Hi Groans @ DM that is sooo bad :D:D
The curtains you made are lovely. I have brought a pleater but for future use.
Yes family can be soo inconsiderate wanting to stay so we have to put DH on hold. ( nah love then coming really);)
My two daughters both left quite early as went to uni a distance away to far to commute. Think it is the guys judging from friends that want to stay at home. Maybe cos girls are natural washers/ironers/cleaners where as fellas are not so keen. My friends son is over 50yrs has a girlfriend/who has a house but he prefers to live with mum who does everything for him.

have had a good laugh at all your attempts to get the fledglings to fly the nest, but even when they do they are like boomerangs they keep comming back, I have moved my oldest daughter down to London twice now, 1st time I hired a Luton van and drove down after work with all her stuff (nightmare) arrived at 1am and offloaded, stayed overnight and returned next morning, THREE WEEKS later had to go back and bring her home,2nd time lasted a bit longer but not much ? :rolleyes:now thankfully shes settled down married and living just a couple of miles away.PHEW

Hi Cookie and Gerry
Hubby and I have decided the only thing that's going to get the offspring away is to move to a studio flat in Moffat (a small borders town). They wouldn't like Moffat. They wouldn't like squashing into a studio flat and it's too far from work, and the town, and the mates, etc. etc. Moffat is starting to sound really great!!

Hi Davidsmum,
Curtains.........yours hang nicer.......Please......;) :D :p
Nah! I never really know quite what I'm going to do till I get my hands on them. They're all slightly different. Well, no, not really the principals are the same as yours. Exactly the same. It's just the pelmets and stuff that are different really. I make them the same way, use starch to stiffen then pin them into the shape for the tieback and spray them again. Easy peasy - job done!!

Hi Amanda,
I know. If they go, I'll get two double rooms. Well, one. Hubby wants to claim the other one. I can still work on all the numerous dolls houses (I plan on having) while he watches plasma tv in his little corner !!

You will just have to let your granddaughter know that you intend to live a lot longer as you have a lot more houses to get under your belt, but as she gets older you could always rope her in to help with the mini housework!!

You have to plan this carefully girls……two children left here for there own homes….hubby pinched the bigger room for his office, leaving me the box room for my hobby room. Now when the children come up together to stay (they both have partners now) we put a double mattress down in hubby’s office cause you wouldn’t get a double in the box room anyway. So I got the better deal here cause my hobby room stays giggle

That is so clever of you, of course hubby thinks he got the better side of the deal with the bigger room while you are quietly sniggering in your lovely hobby room!!! You could alway move the bits in the utility outside, and use the utility room as a hobby room or get your hubby to build you a workshop in the garden!!! then you can leave the children in the house for hubby to look after!!!! and spend some nice quiet time in your hobby room!!!

Hi cookie
I missed this earlier. That's the trouble with working during the day, so much to catch up on at night! Grandchildren! I'm not in any hurry for any of those  For all I say about nudging the boys out, they're not bad really. They can be useful on occasions for stuff that's too high for me or too heavy!! Moving to Moffat has become a standing joke in our house as hubby is from Dumfries and knows the surrounding area well.
As for the curtains and pelmets. To be honest, I do struggle with them. I sort of know what effect I want but have to think long and hard on how to achieve it in miniature and how to get it to look good as well. I'm not sure where I'm going with the house next. Will have to think about that. Drawing Room or Dining Room?

Hello davidsmum,
Phewie! It took me ages to read all this thread! lol.
Just wanted to say, I love your pictures, your house looks ever so nice. And I've picked up two great tips too: 1, using the dental tools for hard-to-reach areas, to see what you're doing. That's a fab tip that I'll be remembering! And 2, the photo your hubby took and then turned Sepia, that really looks great.
... I'll be doing that too :D I want to get a nice victorian-looking photo album and use it to document my progress with my first house. I'll take all the pics and convert them to Sepia so they look 'antique' ... I'm going to start that tonight before I do any decorating or anything else to the house.
Won't that be lovely to keep and look back on in years to come, when no doubt I'll be on my 5th/6th house?!!

Hi Claire,
Sorry to take so long to respond to your post about my dh but I must have missed this first time round. It takes ages, doesn't it, to catch up with it all?
I'm glad you liked what I'm doing and the sepia photos. An album keeping a record of your progress is a great idea. I've got photos on the computer but there's loads and loads. I get carried away. I can't decide on what's the best view so I take left hand side, right hand side, centrally placed photos, photos showing different details, photos showing close ups of items I'm particularly pleased with.......the list goes on and on. It's fun though and I like looking back to the very first ones of me doing the dry build. It all seems like ages ago.

Thanks for that. I have become quite obsessive about getting the period exactly right, I'm so into it now. The only thing I have done that deviates from it a bit is the hallway. I know it wouldn't have been as bright but I figured it was only a tiny space and to make all the woodwork dark, well, no-one would have been able to see any of the detail like the visiting cards, the parcel, etc. I've not done much on it recently but that will soon change!!

Hi megimoops
Thanks for that. I'm doing 1880. I'm very strict about that and research is done to the point of obsession! A lot of "staring" is done as well and that can tell you what feels and looks right. Invest in some books and visit NT properties (oh, and keep the guide books as they are good references). It's amazing what info you'll pick up on the way like, perforated toilet paper was introduced in 1880 but aspirin wasn't around!

Hi Amanda,
Ha ha! I didn't know that - well, I wouldn't would I? It is so very different from Edinburgh, especially late at night. The only thing I could compare the centre of London late at night with, was Firework Night at the end of the Festival. Trafalgar Square was heaving with folk and even allowing for the fact that it was 11.30pm on a Saturday night, Edinburgh isn't like that. On arriving back (11pm Sunday night) it struck me how open the centre of Edinburgh is and quite quiet. I think I'll just stay here!!

Hi Cookie,
Thanks for that. The wallpaper is called The Gathering in Green. You can get it from: https://www.jennifersofwalsall.co.uk/store/ but if it is only a small piece, I'll check what I've got left and you're more than welcome to it if it's of any help.
I didn't get your posting till I got back so wasn't aware I had to study the staircase!! Sorry. I'm sure one of the DH mags has a picture of a staircase not dis-similar. I'll check shortly and get back to you with the Issue No. It's probably better to study.
Hi DM. glad to hear you had a great girly week-end, I would love to see QM house it looks amazing. that wallpaper you said the name is gathering in the green? the one I have has gold diamond lines on white background which I thought looked like the one in your dining room but by the sound of that title yours is different. I did get a piece of the same paper from someone but sadly it was the silver one, I am now contemplating trying to go over the silver with a gold pen as the area missing the paper isnt in an obvious place. so unless I hit lucky thats what I will do.

Yes, the Gathering in green. Its a pale mustardy background with sort of pale greeny mustard diamond shapes on it and a terracotta colour diamond thing in the centre.

Hi DM, just had a bit of a catch up today as I wasnt on yesterday, love the new pics, tables are so realistic, I had another look back at your house also and noticed you have the same paper that I originally came on here to ask about as I was short of a tiny piece to finish and couldnt get any more, can I ask where you got it from, its the gold criss-cross one. hope you have a fab week-end, when you see QMH can you take particular notice of the stairs in the main hall of the house, better still stick them in your bag :D I have been trying to plan a reproductuction of a similar style into my house working from the picture link on here but its hard work.:(

Hello all,
I've been working on Hambleton Hall today (and the Tea Shoppe!). I've made a template and covered it with flooring for the Drawing Room. This is now under two gardening books to flatten it. The walls have been prepared ready for papering and I've sent off for a fire, a hearth, a chandelier and a pair of wall sconces. Hopefully these will be with me soon.
I've also added a small basin to the back wall of the kitchen as I realised there wasn't any facility for the staff to wash their hands unless they continually went into the scullery so I did that today too.
I've shown a picture of the fire surround I have for the Drawing Room. I hope you can see the detail on it as it's really quite something.

Hi Wombat
Thanks, I'm pleased you like it. The ham and pheasant were bought at a fair quite some time ago and I got the rabbit from e-bay, again ages ago. You should be able to find a rabbit if you go to DH miniatures (e-bay) then "hand made items". That's where I found mine. Someone else on the forum got a gutted rabbit recently from e-bay but I can't remember who it was. You shouldn't have any difficulty getting the ham and pheasant either. Hope that helps. I'm keen to follow your progress with Preston Manor. How long now before you get it?

as long as nothing goes drastically wrong (ie car break down or something in the big house going bang)i should be ordering a new house 2 weeks today! i'm not getting preston manor now. i was laying in bed thinking (its the only place quiet nough here) and although i have the room and its a gorgeous house and a great price at the moment i thought about he kind of detail i'd like to achieve and i think on a big big house like that it would be so much more expensive than i can justify spending at the moment. i'm hoping this will be a life long hooby so there is no doubt i will get it in the future but for my next house it just isn't the one.
i have however chosen thehouse i'm getting and its Rutland Grange. still big but not obsene!! enough scope to do what i want and a fair amount of rooms and also i totally love the windows on it!! i've seen windowns like it on buildings before and always thought they looked great.
i'm going to be getting the house , basement and plinth for it and i sooooo can't wait. hubb has even helped me work out how to move the room around so that it goes in the best place possible!! (bless him)

Morning all,
Well, I've stopped before I've started! Today was the day that HH finally got off the ground again after much staring and planning and shopping. I've papered the walls and laid the floor. Right, I thought, what's next. Lighting. I have two candelabra for a console table that have bi-pin candle bulbs (packaged seperately). One set of bulbs went in fine. No problems. The first one on the second fitting went in fine too. Did the last one? No it did not! One of the wires snapped! Had to get back on line to order more. Another hold up.
I'm sitting here fizzing away but I'm sure if I go and look at the thing again there's bound to be something I can get on with (I've just been given my breakfast by the way - a coffee and a tea cake!!). Cig and stare next. I'll report back on progress when I've calmed down - hee hee.

aw poor you!! that is such a pain when i wire snaps!! i did that on southover when i moved the house but forgot the plugs were tucked into a drawer on its unit to keep them tidy, low and behold as i moved the house the wire snapped, and of course it was way to short to be fixed so had to buy a whole new light grrrr. i am waiting for items to come before i can get on with the rest of the tower which is a pain as i really want to get the roof on.

Hi Wombat
Brilliant move! I've been having my shopping delivered ever since I started working full time. Well worth the delivery money, I can tell you. I've not been disappointed yet.
