Question Builders materials....

Hi all

As some of you may know I am attempting to build my own castle, now I am looking for the parts that go on top of the battlements l_/-\_/-\_/-\_l...only trouble is I am not sure of the name I hope you may know what I mean?

Now would anywhere stock materials such as these or would I have to make my own? To be honest I'd prefer to buy some as I cant be bothered with anymore sawing at the moment! If anyone could point me in the direction of somewhere that would stock these or at least tell me what they are called so I can search for something like it that would be great

l_/-\_/-\_/-\_/-\_/-\_/-\__/-\_/-\_/-\_/-\_/-\_/-\_/-\_/-\_/-\__/-\_/-\_l

I am sure they are called Castellations which form part of the battlements.

I think that should be Crenellations, not castellations (but of course I could well be wrong). As I understand it the crenellation is the 'gap', the merlon(? not sure i remember that right) is the 'block'. I've done a few castle-type things and am always on the lookout for stuff to use in the next one, but have never come accross any ready-made merlons & crenels (aka crenellations). Sorry.

For some castle type inspiriation, you might like to take a look at this blog: Tudor Doll Castle

Hi,Celestial I am still not sure about the word Castellated. have you any further information.
castellated Decorated with battlements (a parapet with alternating indentation and raised portions); also called crenellation.

Hi Tony,

Here's a couple of dictionary definitions:

cas·tel·lat·ed (kst-ltd)
adj.
1. Furnished with turrets and battlements in the style of a castle.
2. Having a castle.

Noun 1. crenellation
- a rampart built around the top of a castle with regular gaps for firing arrows or guns
battlement, crenelation
crenel, crenelle - a notch or open space between two merlons in a crenelated battlement
fortress, fort - a fortified defensive structure
merlon - a solid section between two crenels in a crenelated battlement
bulwark, rampart, wall - an embankment built around a space for defensive purposes; "they stormed the ramparts of the city"; "they blew the trumpet and the walls came tumbling down"
2. crenellation - the action of constructing ramparts with gaps for firing guns or arrows
crenelation
construction, building - the act of constructing something; "during the construction we had to take a detour"; "his hobby was the building of boats"

As I understand it crenellations can be a feature of castellation, but are not absolutely necessary for something to be described as castellated.

I know exactly what you mean! Looking at everyone's creations on here has made me realise what can be achieved with that extra bit of work and planning.
