Default Room sizes

Hi all

I have read a few comments about some of the kits having too small rooms (usually the really big houses with many rooms) so I wondered what is a good room size?

At this point it looks like my main rooms will be about 10 inches wide x 14 inches deep which I think will be alright for a cottage and I dont want to go any bigger or my 'little' house won't be able to fit into my 'big' house.

What do others think?

Thanks.

i think if you put into the room any furniture of similar size you can judge if its big enough. a bathroom in most houses will be small since it only has to fit a bath toilet and sink in it. for me the living room should comfortably fit a coffee table, 3 piece suite and a display unit with a tv on the wall or sitting on a separate unit and still have a reasonable space to walk between the furniture. often the rooms look far too cramped in my opinion

Many of the house kits on the market have room sizes which are quite small in comparison to real houses but I suppose the makers are thinking of space as if you really stuck to the true size of houses we would have to accomodate such big miniatures in our homes Kits do vary though and it's just a matter of finding one you're happy with. I suppose to answer your question look at a room in your house and try to imagine/scale down that into miniature A room 14" deep X 10" wide for instance I would rate as quite a good size room in dollshouse terms...

Thank you Dolly and Kath.

I was thinking in terms of real size rooms as well, which makes my measurements smallish rooms but I think in a dolls house you don't need as much free space to walk through. Your rooms that I have seen, Kath look perfectly proportioned when furnished (and perfect in every other way!)

I agree about some rooms looking too cramped, Dolly and would rather be prepared early than disappointed later. Because I am working from a set of plans, currently being heavily adapted, now is the time to work out these things. The rooms in your Stratford House look well proportioned too. (and also perfect! I spend so much time gazing in awe at the albums on here. )

aww thank you, Stratford is massive with very large rooms, which is kinda ironic since they need less furniture than most, fairbanks has well proportioned rooms also. i found the ceiling height a problem in the olde coach inn although this does add a charm of its own.

i agree that now is the time to figure things out for your house.

Ah.... ceilings!

The ceilings in my plans are equivalent to 7 1/2 feet which I thought might be too low, especially for viewing inside but watching Barnaby and Jones (Midsomer Murders) ducking through doorways and below beams in cottages I suspect that is the correct height and I should leave that one alone.

Hi Bluebird, I was lucky my house had removeable internal walls. This meant I could have larger hallways and rooms, I admit I have less rooms but at least they are a good size now and as its early Georgian I dont need a bathroom. Also the use of false doors helps to suggest further rooms. I do however have the same ceiling problem as mine are low compared to a Georgian house which has caused a lot of compromising when decorating.
