Default How I got started

Hi everyone. I thought I would share my story of how I got started in the world of dolls houses...... or house in my case as I am just starting my second!

Ten years ago, my daughter asked me to drive her to a job interview in Leamington Spa.
We had a good lunch and while she was in her interview I walked around the shops there. Well it would have been rude not to!

I came across a shop called Dolls Domain and I wandered into this amazing mini world. The owners own house was on display and as soon as I looked inside that was it, I was hooked. Not by the mini perfection of it all but by the 12th scale brass microscope sitting on the mini desk in the mini study.
You see in a former life I was a microscopist and this one item made me want a dolls house.
Hubby bought Montgomery Hall that Christmas and I was off.
It was almost 2 years before the shop had managed to restock a small brass microscope but I eventually bought one.
It was the help and encouragement of the shop owners that kept me going with my mini build and their help and advice was always spot on. As business needs must, they have diversified and are no longer a dedicated mini shop but I believe they are still in Leamington and last time I visited they did have dolls house pieces stocked.

That's my story

Sue

That was so intersting Sue. Sometimes you just stop and wonder......How did it all started??? Sometimes you just take it for granted. It just becomes a part of you. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. Xxx

Hello Sue
That's really interesting, thank you so much for sharing it. I am so glad you eventually got your mini microscope. It has clearly been a hugely satisfying hobby for you as your Montgomery Hall is wonderful.
Hugs, B x

My story is a bit complicated as I really don't know when or how it started. I loved dolls houses as long as I can remember. My first dolls house was given to me at the age of 4 which I still have and it is in perfect condition with the original paper and pieces. I always enjoyed dolls houses at a young age building barbie houses out of boxes and so on. I always loved crafts even at a younge age as I hated TV. The problem in Malta dolls houses shops don't exist. It is a complete taboo. Internet was my doom. I always wanted a collectors dolls house. When I finished school and started my new job I wanted to built a collectors dolls house which I did. It has been over 15 years now and I have never turned back.

A lovely story on how you got started Sue. Mine's not so interesting but I'll share it too.

I had a DH when I was 7 or 8 years old and loved it I remember buying tiny minis for it each week when I went to town, a toaster, an electric fire, furniture and all the usual minis to make my DH lovely. But when I was 11 years old we moved house and what happened to my DH I can only guess as I was told it got lost. I think it never even got packed up, but still, too long ago to get upset about now. Anyhow I always knew I would get another one. I kept looking in the local DH shop with my bf ( later to become my husband) he said he would buy me one, but our house was not big enough to accommodate a DH. I kept telling him when we have room I'll get one. We moved house nearly 4 years ago and Sean bought me a DH for Christmas 2012. And like all of you I'm caught up in the magical mini world.

The 40 year wait was worth every minute.

Thanks for sharing your stories. It is so interesting to hear how everyone got started. Here is mine;

Hello. My name is Jutta and I am an eBay addict! I was browsing eBay some time ago. I forget exactly what I was looking for but think it was a magnifying glass. I searched and up came a 1/12th scale version of what I was looking for. I was amazed! I spent the next few hours just searching and looking and becoming more and more fascinated. I found out there was a dolls house fair happening in Plymouth. I went along. I bought a house, and that was that.
I was too scared to start my massive new house so I bought a small shop and did that instead. That was about 7 years ago. I am now finally starting my big house.

Hi ,
I had a dolls house as a child in the early 60s and use to play with it a lot. As I got older I used to work with clay and enjoyed art and crafts. My hubby bought an old gramophone for me (25 years qgo )and I was so in love with it I wanted to make a model of it from Balsa then I wondered could I make more and have a dolls house as a shop.................Anyway, I then made a good friend who is a Theatre organist (I play the organ not now because the joints in my hands are badly worn) the organist introduced me to the organ and I fell in love with it and was on the technicians team to restore a very old one ..................made a model of that too....................hubby found DHE on the internet and bought me the country store and I carried on from there.............................
